We are delighted to announce that at the recent World Championships in Korea, Anna Turney has made further strides towards her quest for gold at the 2010 Paralympics Winter Games.
Participating in her first ever World Championships, and competing against some of the best athletes in the world at sitski-ing, Anna achieved a fantastic fourth place in the Giant Slalom and an impressive eighth place in the Slalom – despite a disappointing first run. 25 nations participated in the World Championships and for the first time Anna had to start her runs “with a TV camera in my face”. Her achievement is all the more remarkable when you remember that Anna only joined the British Disabled Ski Team less than twelve months ago.
According to Dave Chugg, Development Coach of the British Disabled Ski Team, “Anna has the potential to achieve at the very highest level and to be at the main arena of winter Paralympics 2010”. To do this Anna needs about £10,000 a season just to compete at this season’s level. To improve her chances of fulfilling her potential, Anna needs to spend the summer months racing and training on snow in New Zealand. This will take even more money.
