Training
"A key feature at Mills & Reeve is trust – giving trainees a high degree of responsibility at an early stage, but always providing the training and support they need."
Brian Marshall
Training Principal
At Mills & Reeve trainees complete six four-month seats and are recruited to the Birmingham, Cambridge and Norwich offices.
Subject to business needs, the firm is happy for those trainees with a desire to undertake a seat not practised in their base office to temporarily move to another office, including London, and supports the move with an accommodation allowance.
Areas of work where trainees currently sit include: corporate, banking and finance, corporate tax, education, public law, technology, real estate, planning and environment, projects, construction, insurance, commercial disputes, probate and trust administration, agriculture and estates, private tax, employment, family and matrimonial, real estate disputes and regulatory defence.
On the job learning is supported by our Professional Skills Course and a programme of in-house lectures and one-to-one training with our dedicated team of professional support lawyers who have developed an impressive array of precedents and practice notes. You will also receive training on Felix (our in-house know-how system) and comprehensive IT training. Each trainee is paired with a partner or senior solicitor who will act as a mentor during the course of the two-year training contract. The mentor is available for confidential support and career development advice. Trainees' performance is assessed by a mix of informal reviews during each seat and a more formal review at the end of each seat.
The firm attracts City quality work but also offers trainees a relaxed and supportive environment. Early responsibility is encouraged.
Post qualification
As an Investor in People, Mills & Reeve is committed to career development post qualification. We help our solicitors identify their own tailor made training plans, provide an array of in-house seminars running throughout the year, using our own partners and external barristers, and supplement these with professional and technical training both in-house and off-site.
