Financial services – insurance

Your challenges

Since the economic downturn, there has been a sharp rise in the number of claims against banks, financial institutions and professionals providing financial services. Ponzi schemes, stock market losses and bank collapses have led to huge losses and tighter regulation has encouraged disaffected clients to seek redress. Insurers are stretched and need legal advisers they can depend on. We can and do deal with all types of dispute whether by mediation, expert determination, litigation or arbitration. We have particular expertise in defending and resolving claims against accountants and auditors, brokers, independent financial advisers and trustees.

Achieving your ambitions

Our clients want lawyers who will work with them to resolve the issues they face. We appreciate how sensitive your matters can be and are proud of our reputation for being friendly and approachable.

Where we act for insurers and insureds, we work to no hidden agenda but adopt a transparent approach. Rarely can a case be resolved only at trial. Together, we cut through the issues, no matter how complex, and aim to provide a pragmatic, commercial solution.

The strength you need

With a spread of lawyers across London, Birmingham, Norwich, Manchester and Leeds, we act for around forty Lloyd’s and London market insurers, as well as their insureds. We have the resources and expertise to deal with a range of problems from policy drafting and coverage advice to disciplinary proceedings. The bulk of our work is helping professionals to resolve claims they are facing from their clients or regulators. We aim to do so tactfully and co-operatively. Where appropriate, we call upon the expert assistance of lawyers in the firm’s other specialist teams such as banking and finance, charities, insolvency, employment and pensions and private client and tax. The firm is recommended in all these areas by Legal 500 and Chambers.

We can also help directors and officers and their insurers and we have experience of dealing with Financial Services Authority disciplinary matters (with some members of our staff having worked at the FSA), of advising and handling complaints made to the Financial Services Ombudsman and in acting for financial institutions and their insurers.
