What can I do for you

I’m a specialist in dispute resolution in the construction and engineering sector. My work involves helping employer clients get their buildings and engineering projects delivered at the right quality, on time and on budget. I also assist contractors (including sub-contractors) and consultants to obtain payment for the work that they have done, and defend construction and engineering consultants from professional negligence claims.

I can assist in any dispute environment – from informal advice through negotiation, mediation and other forms of alternative dispute resolution to adjudication, arbitration and High Court proceedings in the Technology and Construction Court.

Supporting my clients’ objectives

Being aware of, and utilising, the arguments and tactics deployed by both sides in construction and engineering disputes gives an advantage to all clients when advising on their disputes. From first instructions, I establish what it is that my client wants to come away from the dispute with and work towards that aim, rather than simply taking a formulaic approach to claims.

Understanding detail, reacting and adapting quickly and being on hand to advise throughout, as part of the client team where appropriate, are key requirements. Recent experience includes advising a major oil and gas company in relation to two entirely separate multimillion-pound contracts where a contractor was in delay; resolving a large number of impasses between employer/contractor and contractor/sub-contractor at interim payment stage; defending firms of architects and surveyors in negligence claims and unlocking substantial final account disputes.

What do others say?

I am always grateful to hear that I have assisted clients in attaining their objectives. As well as receiving praise for my "tenacious advice", I am always pleased to hear satisfied comments from clients, such as:

"Thank you for the advice, very useful and clear."
"A fitting end to a successful matter."
"That is a great result. Thanks very much for your advice, guidance and support, it has been an interesting learning curve for us."
"I have learnt a lot from your skill and experience, and it was a pleasure working with you."
"My thanks to Paul Slinger, who helped out at what was a horrendous time for our team and the project as a whole.”

What else should you know?

I am member of the Society of Construction Law. I also frequently attend meetings of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, the Adjudication Society and the Forum for the Built Environment, particularly the newly formed Black Country and Telford branch.
