What can I do for you?
I am a specialist in tax planning for individuals and their families. This work principally involves forward planning and structuring so that capital assets can be built up and preserved without significant taxation loss for the client and then the client's family and heirs. This may involve substantial business interests, or property/land holdings, and can require the use of ownership structures such as family companies, or trusts and partnerships, both onshore and offshore.
Supporting my clients' objectives
A typical client for my work area would be an individual who has built up a trading business and is now intending to pass on this business as a long term venture to one of his adult children. Typically he would be looking to retirement in the near future but be concerned to preserve fairness between this child and his other children who are not involved in the business. This is a difficult balance and needs careful structuring particularly in view of recent taxation changes, but is crucially important both for the good of the business and its employees but also on the family side where long term relationships are at stake.
What do others say?
As part of the private client group within the firm, over the years we have received various commendations and awards, most recently being voted Private Client Team of the Year at the Legal Business 2009 national awards, which speaks for itself. Chambers UK reports the team's reassuring enthusiasm and dedication to their work and to client care and records my "enviable reputation for providing quality tax planning advice."
Chambers have recently commented "Peter Furnivall is 'very bright, very measured and hugely experienced, with a deep vein of common sense that means he is usually right'."
What else should you know?
I act as long term trustee and adviser of various family and charitable trusts, and contribute articles to external and internal publications on tax and trust topics on a regular basis.
