Associate Robert Weatherley is speaking at a conference in Beijing on the right to privacy under UK and Chinese law and the extent to which new technology encroaches on individual privacy. He will also examine the tension between privacy rights and issues of national security, specifically how both Chinese and UK law empowers the state to "trump" the right to privacy if there is a perceived conflict between the exercise of that right and the perceived interests of the nation. The conference, which takes place on 6-7 September, is organised and funded by the European Union and is part of the EU-China Human Rights Dialogue that has been running since 1996. Robert will also give the talk to an audience at the Chinese University of Politics and Law in Beijing.
