Levelling the playing field for female athletes

We have launched a unique legal offering, in an effort to “level the playing field” for women in sport. The package includes reduced hourly rates, an initial hour of free advice, and mentoring and networking opportunities. The Equaliser is available to professional and amateur female athletes, women’s sports teams and governing bodies, and brands investing in women’s sport.

The sports law team at Mills & Reeve has an impressive track-record, having worked with some of the leading stars of women’s sport including the England women’s national football team, the England netball team, and the Ladies European Tour in golf.

Carol Couse, partner in the sports law team at Mills & Reeve, said: “The FIFA Women’s World Cup was a huge success this year, drawing bigger audiences than ever before. It also refocused attention on the pay disparity between male and female athletes. Although the prize money pot had been substantially increased, it was still less than a tenth of the total prize money awarded at last year’s men’s FIFA World Cup.

“The Mills & Reeve sports law team has worked on many major cases relating to women in sport, and we wanted to find a way to recognise the commercial challenges faced by female athletes and organisations. The Equaliser provides specialist sports law advice and helps to create a strong network of women working in sport, while also acknowledging the pay gap between men’s and women’s sport.

“We are positioning ourselves as the natural home for women’s sport, and offering tangible help to women in the industry, whether they’re negotiating a playing contract or sponsorship deal, fighting a discrimination or harassment case, or protecting their reputation.”

As well as offering reduced and affordable hourly rates for legal services and fixed discounted legal fees for projects, The Equaliser also includes a free hour of preliminary consultation. Clients can choose a female lawyer to lead their case, as the Mills & Reeve core sports law team is 50% female.

Alongside this, clients also benefit from access to the firm’s network of leading sports industry clients and contacts, invites to women’s sports round table discussions, and participation in sports conferences and seminars. Mills & Reeve is also offering mentoring for any female athletes who want to pursue a legal career.
