The role

The firm has always taken its environmental impact seriously. However we now, as part of a wider ESG strategy for the business, wish to achieve a real step change in reducing our environmental impact in the drive towards carbon net zero.To help us achieve this, we are looking to recruit a Sustainability Manager who will take a leading role in the development and delivery of our environmental strategy and our carbon net zero goal.Initially the role will involve developing the firm‘s environmental and sustainability strategy and policies across all areas of the business, including energy usage, waste management, water usage and management, transport and travel, food, procurement and managing the carbon footprint of our real estate. This strategy would enable us to set a realistic date for achieving carbon net zero, and include a series of suggested (and realistic) measures to get us there.In helping us frame the strategy the successful candidate for this role would also be involved in helping us assess the cost to the business of implementing the strategy. The role would also involve helping us set realistic non-financial milestones and targets (or KPIs) against which we would expect to measure ourselves. We would want the successful candidate to also help us assess how we could obtain external accreditation for our sustainability strategies and policies (such as an appropriate ISO accreditation).The next phase of the role would be to oversee the implementation of that strategy, including inputting into the annual assessment of the targets or KPIs that we set, updating those KPIs as we progress, and the reporting of our environmental performance within the firm‘s annual ESG report. Alongside this, we‘d expect the successful candidate to liaise with a group of sustainability champions drawn from across the firm, and to take on board ideas and innovations that members of staff may suggest. The role would also involve supporting our bids team, helping them complete sections of any tenders or bid documents relating to sustainability.This is a new role within the firm. It will be a challenging role requiring a high level of communication and influencing skills working with key teams and stakeholders to help create and then deliver a firm wide, consistent set of agreed environmental strategies and goals.The firm operates a Hybrid working policy where colleagues have the ability to work a mix of office/home based working.  This position the role will require some travel between offices. Whilst advertised as a full time position we would consider a 0.8 equivalent.

Key Relationships

Reporting to the Director of Facilities with a dotted line to the Head of ESG, key relationships will need to be developed with Partners, Head of Offices, Legal Services Managers and local support managers/team leaders, Business Support Heads and, Facility management teams.

The person

Given the challenges of this role, and its wide-ranging nature, it is likely that your background and experience will include:a real interest in, and a passion for, sustainabilityexperience in delivering environmental and sustainability strategies and policies;an understanding of the process for setting, measuring, and reporting on non-financial KPIs around sustainabilitya qualification to degree level or the equivalent with work related experience in an environmental subject;experience in preparing for and overseeing ISO or equivalent accreditation;property/facilities experience; andgood working knowledge of IT including Microsoft office suite
