What can I do for you?

I am a real estate lawyer in our Birmingham office, helping with the property needs of a range of education clients from the higher, further, academies, studio schools and university technical colleges sectors.

My experience also extends to assisting several corporate occupiers and companies with the legal aspects of their estate.

We specialise in all areas of real estate law in England and Wales for education institutions and companies. This includes advising on landlord and tenant matters as well as joint ventures, mergers, leasebacks, acquisitions, disposals, shared services, student accommodation projects and various property portfolio management/strategic issues.

Supporting my clients' aims

A real highlight for me was acting on behalf of Birmingham City University on the relocation of its world famous Royal Birmingham Conservatoire to a new £57 million purpose-built facility at Millennium Point, Birmingham - the first new build conservatoire since 1987. Whilst there were complex, multi-party negotiations to enable the site to be assembled and this was all in the context of a tight timeframe imposed by a CPO settlement (on which we also acted), the timetable was met. The state-of-the-art facilities opened to students and the public in 2017.

What do others say?

I am recommended in legal directories Legal 500 and Chambers & Partners being described as "always available with responsive and succinct advice" (Legal 500, 2015); "very attentive, exceedingly charming, very responsive and extremely client focussed" (Chambers & Partners, 2016); "a very strong negotiator who is also valued for his very balanced opinion and very good communication skills" (Chambers & Partners, 2017) with a "'proactive yet pragmatic approach', 'a very good understanding of the university sector' and providing 'commercially sound advice'" (Legal 500, 2017); "regularly called upon for his expert advice across property acquisitions, sales and portfolio management... noted for his strengths in mergers and joint ventures... enjoys a fine reputation for his work in the education sector" (Chambers & Partners, 2018).

What else should you know?

I am the editor of Hot Property, which is the quarterly legal e-newsletter produced by our real estate group. I am also a regular contributor to Property Matters, which is Mills & Reeve's real estate blog, and Fusion, our blog for the education sector. Please get in touch if you'd like to receive any of these.

I am also a member of Cardiff University's Court. The court provides a formal route for raising issues and receiving information about the university. The main purpose is to receive reports from the University's Chair of Council, Treasurer, Vice Chancellor and President about the university's activities. This role gives me an invaluable, non-legal insight into the internal workings and pressures of a higher education institution. This helps me to better understand the concerns and priorities of my university clients and the wider sector.

I am a member of Mills & Reeve's North America Desk. The Desk assists clients with all of their legal requirements in the North American market. The Desk's connections also provide valuable introductions as well as legal advice.
