What can I do for you?

I am a professional negligence specialist. This involves handling claims on behalf of insurers and their insureds and advising on policy coverage issues. I have significant experience in defending claims against solicitors and financial professionals such as accountants and IFAs.

I am regularly instructed to handle complex and high value claims, often with multiple parties and which generally involve ADR such as mediation. For example, I have very recently led the defence of one of the largest pieces of litigation handled by the firm in respect of a £20 million multi party claim for fraud and negligence against a firm of solicitors arising out of over 1,000 conveyancing transactions. My practice is also focused on advising insurers on policy coverage issues and leading dishonesty investigations.

Supporting my clients’ objectives

The key to this is understanding and balancing the business objectives and philosophies of our insurer and insured clients. This involves giving clear strategic, pragmatic and commercial advice from the outset, which allows clients to make an early decision on whether to fight or settle the claim and assess the cost of doing so. Whatever the defence strategy, clients know that I will fight their corner hard to achieve the best possible result.

What do others say?

A very common thing I hear is how approachable, efficient and friendly our lawyers are. We are also admired for our ambition, technical expertise and commerciality. Clients also like that we’re part of a large firm so they can draw on a wide range of services such as real estate, tax and construction. We are a truly national insurance practice and can act for insurers and insureds across the UK.

Our professional indemnity team in the West Midlands is ranked in the top tiers in Legal 500 and Chambers & Partners. We are described in Legal 500 as a "very intelligent team". Chambers describes our team as "the standout presence in the region and a familiar name on the panels of major insurers" and says that "clients benefit from an impressive breadth of expertise and practitioners with the capacity to handle claims involving a variety of professionals".

An insured client commented this year that my team and I "over the last four years, throughout this most incredibly complex piece of litigation, demonstrated not only an enormous grasp of the detail of these transactions, but have also shown exemplary skills as lawyers. They went, in my view, further than I could have ever reasonably expected and not only have they demonstrated these exceptional skills as solicitors and lawyers, but they went out of their way to provide emotional support for me, which went far beyond what I could have reasonably asked of them".

An insurer client also recently wrote: "I would like to thank both of you for achieving what, on any view, was an outstanding settlement. I think the reaction of the insured said it all. "

What else should you know?

I am a member of the Chartered Insurance Institute and Birmingham Insurance Institute. I also regularly contribute articles and speak at seminars on issues facing professional indemnity insurers and their insureds. I am a leading partner in our specialist insurance sub-sector teams focused on defending claims against lawyers and financial professionals as well as advising on policy advice and disputes. I am also a member of the firm's risk management team.
