Government work cuts across many different sectors and is subject to unique scrutiny. Those working in this context need to develop and keep pace with evolving legal, policy and transparency requirements while managing ever-increasing budgetary pressure to achieve more with less. Add to this the additional workload and uncertainties brought by Brexit, and it is easy to see why we view Government bodies as some of the most challenging and stimulating clients which we work with.

Working with you to succeed in challenging times

We are a market leading provider of legal services to Government, acting for a large number of central Government departments, agencies and NDPBs, as well as local Government clients. We are embedded legal advisors on large scale and high profile Government initiatives, from major capital projects through to outsourcing substantial public sector services.

As a full service national firm, we can advise on legal challenges and judicial review as well as on all non-contentious aspects of projects, from employment, pensions and tax to real estate, planning, commercial, corporate and intellectual property.

We are proud to be one of just 12 law firms selected to be a tier one provider under the Crown Commercial Service’s 2017 framework for general legal services to the UK Government. Read more here. This appointment illustrates our strong and growing reputation for Government work.

We have a long track record of close collaboration with and sometimes embedding within our Government client teams. This means that we understand the unique pressures faced by our Government clients, whether from a policy, legal, or budgetary perspective.

Our experience

  • We have a strong track record of working with the UK Ministry of Defence, advising on a number of projects with a combined value of over £2 billion. This has included advising on: availability contracts with BAE Systems for the Harrier and Typhoon jets, a Type 45 Destroyer In-Service Support Contract with BVT Surface Fleet Support, engine contracts with Rolls-Royce and the outsourcing of army recruitment services.
  • We advised BIS (now the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy) on the sale of Constructionline to Capita. Constructionline is one of the UK’s largest procurement and supply chain management services and was set up initially for public sector contracts. It aims to save £165 million annually for construction industry buyers and suppliers, particularly SMEs, by providing a list of verified suppliers.
