What can I do for you?

I have worked in the employment law field since 1984. During this time, I have had experience of almost every employment problem imaginable and have developed a good eye for a commercial solution. The clients I work with include a number of leading employers as well as many smaller technology businesses in and around Cambridge. I am a CEDR accredited mediator.

Supporting my clients’ objectives

Law is not a precise science, but it is possible to identify with a reasonable degree of accuracy what the outcome of any particular course of action will be. That is only one part of the equation. Do you, the client, want a risk free option – or is the commercial driver so great that you are happy to accept a lot of risk in return for a swift solution? Is money less important than speed? That may be the case when dealing with a CEO who is holding back a business – or a football manager who is holding back the team. On other occasions the risk averse, but slower, approach may well be called for.

Understanding a client's attitude to risk is key to advising them what to do.

What do others say about me?

One of the most pleasing comments I have received related to advice I gave about mediating what seemed like an intractable dispute that was heading for a 20 day hearing. With some nervousness, my client agreed to go ahead with the mediation, which produced a rapid settlement at a cost that was a small fraction of what was being claimed. They were very pleased and told me: “The outcome was far better than we could reasonably have hoped for.”

Chambers UK says that I am "A commercially astute employment lawyer known for his ability to unearth pragmatic solutions in a timely manner."

The Legal 500 says that I (and the three other employment law partners in Mills & Reeve, Cambridge) "operate with integrity and have an excellent grasp of complex issues".

What else should you know?

I head the Cambridge office of over 300 energetic, enthusiastic bright lawyers and support staff.

I read Economics at university before studying Law. This helps in thinking critically about the cost and benefit of any particular course of action.

I am a trustee of the Cambridge Arts Theatre and a Director of the business organisation Cambridge Ahead.

I enjoy all sports and theatre.
