International lawyers: realising clients’ global ambitions

Our international service is driven by a simple but strong ambition: to provide our clients with expert legal support, wherever they are doing business in the world.

Many of our clients have global businesses, with assets and interests extending beyond the UK. We represent many overseas clients investing in the UK, as well as UK businesses that want to expand into foreign markets.

By supporting our clients’ international ambitions we have developed extensive international experience. Our international lawyers work throughout the world: from the established markets of Europe and North America to the emerging markets of China, India, the Middle East and Brazil.

Through this experience, we have developed a worldwide network of reputable independent law firms. Many of these firms, like us, are members of SCG Legal, a worldwide network of leading law firms. We are always looking to enhance our international network by forging close links with like-minded firms and have signed a memorandum of understanding with French firm FIDAL to formally establish us as preferred suppliers.

We invest heavily in getting to know our international network – and constantly refresh it to be certain we always have the right support available. This means we can ensure our clients have access to the best international lawyers on the ground, at any time.

No matter how complex the issue, we provide practical, straightforward solutions – our international lawyers work closely with clients to achieve the best possible outcomes, efficiently and cost effectively.

Our international lawyers

We offer international lawyers with expertise in key sectors including health, education, insurance, technology, food and agribusiness, real estate investment, energy, as well as private wealth.

Our lawyers regularly travel overseas to establish and maintain relationships. Many have the benefit of secondments with international law firms, providing a deeper understanding of the strengths and specialisms of our network. In certain key jurisdictions we are working with selected relationship firms to establish common service standards and develop training programmes to benefit our clients.

For those jurisdictions most in demand from clients, we have developed a series of international desks manned by lawyers with specialist knowledge and experience of the region. The desks provide clients with detailed insight into issues they are likely to meet and provide a direct link to legal support on the ground in that jurisdiction.

Our international experience

  • Cheung Kong Infrastructure Holdings Limited (the largest Hong Kong Listed entity) on its sale of Cambridge Water plc, which allowed CKI to then launch a £4 billion takeover offer for Northumbrian Water Group plc.
  • Starbev Group on a European wide restructuring, implemented through a series of statutory mergers, de-listings and other capital reorganisations across seven European jurisdictions. This work followed the $2.23 billion acquisition of the Starbev Group by CVC Capital Partners.
  • New York Stock Exchange listed Elster Group GmbH, one of the world's largest electricity, gas and water measurement and control providers, in a £856 million reorganisation and restructuring of some of its European business operations.

The remaining 40 per cent of shares will continue to be held by management and Lion Capital, the private equity firm.
  • The UK Higher Education International Unit on the Science without Borders UK contract, which involves up to 10,000 Brazilian students studying at over 100 selected UK universities and higher education institutions over the next four years.
