What can I do for you ?

I am a highly-experienced commercial sports lawyer, focusing in particular on the commercialisation and protection of sponsorship, media, image and other sports rights. I act for a wide range of clients across the domestic and international sports industry, including federations, professional clubs, sports marketing agencies, racecourses, broadcasters and other similar organisations, and in many sports.

Before moving back to the UK in 2015, I worked overseas in Switzerland and Singapore for a decade for the Infront Sports & Media group on the international licensing of media (and other rights) to the 2006, 2010 & 2014 FIFA World Cups.

Supporting my clients’ objectives

I am deeply passionate about sport and about those who make a positive difference to the industry, and enjoy supporting clients across a variety of sports and jurisdictions and whatever their size and legal demands. Although working on (and attending) 3 editions of the FIFA World Cup is an obvious career highlight, it has been just as satisfying, for example, to advise disruptors and start-ups, including new sports formats and sports technologies. Similarly, while football will always remain a passion, it has also been a true privilege to work on a number of marquee horseracing and cricket sponsorships, on the road cycling world championships and for various sports charities.

Having worked in senior in-house legal roles overseas, I have a wide global network of sports sector clients and contacts, especially throughout SE Asia and China. I also have considerable experience advising international organisations acquiring UK sports rights, and have a real appreciation of the challenges and nuances involved in any cross-jurisdiction deal involving different languages, cultures and courses of dealing.

What do others say?

I have been recognised in various legal and other publications as an expert in sports rights matters, and regularly contribute to the UK national and sport industry press, including BCC Radio 4, The Times, The Guardian, The Daily Mail, Reuters, Sportcal, TV Sports Markets, the Sport Industry Group and Law in Sport.

My clients have described me as pragmatic, commercially-focused and driven. Legal 500 describes our sports law team as “first class in every respect.” Chambers describes our sports law team as having “an outstanding offering in football.”

What else should you know?

Although it wasn’t ideal to fall down a mountain on my honeymoon, this resulted (in a roundabout way!) to a career specialising in sports law and to many hours riding bicycles dressed in spandex. I am a lifelong fan of Luton Town FC, which also has not always been an easy ride! I have a particular interest in women’s sport, especially raising awareness of the commercial opportunities for sponsors and broadcasters arising from increased audiences, media coverage and investment.

I am a member of the UK Government’s Department of Trade & Industry - Sports Economy Sector Advisory Group, a group set up by the DTI to create links between a range of private and public UK sports organisations with the aim of stimulating import and export sports business.
