Working in Birmingham

Insights from Robbie Turner, a principal associate from the real estate team in our Birmingham office:

How would you describe the culture of your office?

Hard working, supportive and most importantly - good humoured!

What is the actual office like as a place to work in?

The open plan nature of the office creates a real sense of togetherness, and I have always found my colleagues (at all levels) to be friendly, approachable and willing to help out. The office is perfectly located in the centre of Birmingham with great access to shops, bars etc.

What kind of hours do you work?

Typically I start work at 9 and finish at around 6-30. This can of course vary if, for example, I have an after work event to attend or I have an important deadline to meet.

How long does it take you to get into work?

I live in Harborne which is about 3 miles from the City Centre and it normally takes me around 30 minutes to get to work.

What kind of social life do you enjoy with your colleagues?

As a team we often go for impromptu after work drinks at local bars. The Social Committee also organise monthly pay day drinks and other events including lunch time quizzes and theatre trips. Once a year the firm organises a charity challenge which normally involves climbing a mountain or two somewhere.

What local bars and restaurants do you recommend?

Birmingham has a great selection of fantastic bars and restaurants. This includes no fewer than 5 Michelin starred restaurants (that’s 5 more than Manchester by the way, but who’s counting!). My personal favourites include Pure Bar (for a quick slurp), Sushi Passion (for amazing sushi), Andersons in the Jewellery Quarter (for great steak) and Reflex on Broad Street (for karaoke!).

What else is there to do in Birmingham?

If you need a bit of retail therapy the office is ideally placed for lunch time trips to the Bull Ring and Grand Central. The Barclaycard Arena, O2 Academy, Symphony Hall, the Rep and the Hippodrome are great venues for seeing live music, performances and shows. If you like sport the city and surrounding region have a number of good quality football teams and Edgbaston Cricket Ground is one of the best venues in the country for watching live cricket.
