FemTech: regulator set to review period and fertility tracking apps – your views

Since the term ‘FemTech’ was first coined in 2016 by entrepreneur Ida Tin, it has grown to include a range of technology-enabled, consumer centric products and solutions.

Technology-enabled self-care apps covering fertility and period trackers and wearables are among just a few of the FemTech solutions helping women take greater charge of their health and data.

Recently data security concerns have been raised about the use of period and fertility trackers given the sensitive and personal information involved.

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) is reviewing how period tracking apps and fertility tracking apps available to UK users, process their users’ personal information.

The ICO is keen to hear from users to help inform their review of how personal information is used by period tracking apps and fertility tracking apps. The regulator is considering whether users may experience harmful consequences from, or negatively impacted by, the way their personal information is used or shared by these apps.

The closing date for the survey is 5 October 2023, click here to complete the online form.
