Corporate governance – local government

Your challenges

As local government specialists acting for over 100 local authorities, we pride ourselves that we understand the challenges faced by our local authority clients. Never have you faced such a complex web of competing powers, functions and constitutional issues. We understand, though, that the real work of a local authority never stands still. It is important that your advisors can offer up-to-the-minute advice, which is sensitive to the political context but is still practical.

Achieving your ambitions

Our corporate governance experts include a number of solicitors who have worked in-house for local authorities. We have experience of a wide range of issues including investigating alleged breaches of the Code of Conduct, acting as monitoring officer in the conduct of investigations, providing senior members and officers with training on the Code of Conduct, drafting rules of procedure and advising on the publication of information in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

In particular, we have also advised on joint committee and corporate structures under the umbrella of shared services arrangements, the creation and control of companies for economic regeneration purposes and the use of charitable “wrappers” for corporate trading entities.

Increasingly, local authorities are encouraged to be creative in the way that they use their powers in order to secure benefits for their population through the innovative use of structures. We are well versed in such matters and we can advise on making the best use of the tools available to you.
