What can I do for you?
I head up our tax, benefits and charities team. Working mainly in the not-for-profit sector – with universities, charities and NHS bodies – I am a specialist in charity law, VAT and tax. I also specialise in property tax and have advised on a large number of complex property development projects and joint ventures.
Supporting my clients’ objectives
One long-running project I have led involved advising Newnham College Cambridge on VAT mitigation arrangements for the construction of its new library. HM Revenue & Customs challenged the arrangements, but we won a famous victory over them in the House of Lords.
Recently, I also worked with our projects team to develop a charity-based structure to deliver a £300 million residential accommodation project for Aston University.
What do others say?
The House of Lords described the arrangements that we put in place for Newnham College as “skilfully prepared and carefully executed”. Chambers UK called it “a Rolls-Royce of schemes”.
In Chambers UK, I was also described as “a real expert on many tax issues arising from the corporate and charity sectors”.
What else should you know?
I have recently run a series of seminars on the Charities Act 2006 for HE institutions. I am currently advising the British Universities Finance Directors Group on the implications of the new “public benefit” rules for the tax status of universities.
