NHSX hosts round-table of regulators to talk AI and what the plan is

Matthew Gould, Chief Executive of NHSX, recently convened a round-table discussion to work through the issues around Artificial Intelligence in health – recognising that AI has “enormous potential for the NHS, if we can use it right”. But accepting that “doing AI right” means putting a framework in place to safeguard patient safety and confidentiality.

With the heads of all 12 regulators and organisations involved in AI from CQC, NICE, Information Commissioner, the National Data Guardian, the Health Research Authority and MHRA at this meeting (a full list of attendees can be found here), all agreed the need for:

  • Clarity in role
  • Joined-up approach
  • Joined-up regulatory sandbox for AI
  • Capability to assess AI systems at the scale and pace required
  • Working out how we handle machine learning
  • Communication with clinicians and innovators

NHSX’s new national Artificial Intelligence Laboratory will form a key part in AI’s development – to find out more on the AI Lab and its focus you can read our earlier blog here.
