Government - illustration

Government bodies need to respond to the nation's biggest challenges, often very quickly and under great pressure. We are here to help you effectively deliver policy initiatives and time-critical projects.

Government work is subject to unique levels of scrutiny and change. People working in this context need to keep pace with evolving legal, policy and transparency requirements while managing ever-increasing budgetary pressure to achieve more with less.

We can help you balance these tensions. With our in-depth knowledge of the sector and the legal landscape in the UK and beyond, we support the Government Legal Department, departmental policy teams and Cabinet Office advisers in achieving their goals. From renegotiating long-term contracts to springing into action to stem a reputational issue, we know what to do.

Our lawyers

We have 125 lawyers working for government organisations, including specialists in key areas such as contracts and procurement, projects, finance and banking, litigation, estates, employment and pensions, and tax.

Our experience

  • We advised the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy on a number of low carbon investments and climate change projects in Latin America and Africa, as well as on international research and development initiatives.
  • We supported the government’s Pandemic Influenza Preparedness Programme, including advising on contracts for the supply of the influenza vaccine in the event of a pandemic –rated as the UK’s most significant civil emergency risk at the time.
  • The team worked with the Department of Health & Social Care to enable an NHS trust to obtain multi-million pound savings from the refinancing of an existing acute hospital PFI contract. We have also negotiated significant variations to the contract to ensure it is fit for purpose for the remaining period of the concession.
  • We advised on the inadvertent disclosure of 12,000 people’s personal data. We helped our client prioritise actions, manage communications and develop and implement its strategy for the immediate and longer term – including liaising with data subjects and the Information Commissioner.
  • With the Ministry of Defence, we have worked on availability contracts for fast jets, support contracts for ships and battlefield communications, outsourcing of facilities management and recruitment services, and complex PFI contract variations.

We work with over 40 central government departments and non-departmental public bodies, including:

  • Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy
