What can I do for you?

I am a solicitor in our health team. One of the areas I specialise in is the law relating to children in a healthcare context ranging from the tricky area of best interests decisions to advice on disclosure issues. I have helped to develop our specialist child healthcare law team.

I am also part of a wider team covering the varied, complex and sensitive issues relating to inquests and mental health law. I am a keen advocate and I have represented clients at mental health tribunals and inquests.

Supporting my clients’ objectives

My aim is to ensure that clients are well informed, up to speed and able to deal with as many issues as possible themselves, or at least be able to identify when they need to seek advice.

I regularly deliver training to healthcare professionals, providing updates on legal developments in their field. This also gives people the chance to talk through difficult issues they are facing so that they have a clearer idea of how to tackle them.

I have completed three six-month secondments at a high secure psychiatric unit for one of our key clients. I was able to develop an in depth knowledge and understanding of the client’s key legal and commercial needs. In turn, this meant that I could provide a better service to them.

What do others say?

Legal 500 has rated us as a first tier firm within health and said that we offer a "professional yet personable offering providing comprehensive advice".

Clients have made the following comments about me:

“You came up with the right result and saved everyone lots of time.”
“Many thanks for your swift and able assistance in this matter.”
“Your calm and helpful advice has gone a long way to help us deal with some complex issues.”
“I like your style, you know your stuff.”
“Refreshing to have such a professional training experience.”
“Ruth is empathic, conscientious, professional and very impressive.”

What else should you know?

I led on the launch of Birmingham FLAG (Free Legal Advice Group), a pro bono scheme between our Birmingham office and the Law School at the University of Birmingham. Our solicitors supervise the students in the provision of free legal advice to people in the local community who would not normally be able to access it.

In March 2010, I was shortlisted to the final three in the legal category of Birmingham Young Professional of the Year. In March 2011, I won the Birmingham Law Society award “Pro Bono Lawyer of the Year”. In June 2011, I won the national LawWorks award "Best Contribution by an Individual".

I am currently chair of the Birmingham Law Society Pro Bono Committee, which I helped establish in March 2011. I am also a Birmingham Law Society council member.

It is not all about work though ... every so often I feel the need to put my backpack on and trek around a far flung country!
