Data protection: ICO Annual Report published

Charities may be interested to read the 2014/15 annual report made available by the Information Commissioner’s Office at the start of July 2015.   The Samaritans gets a particular mention for its Radar application.

The report reveals that 31 incidents of data loss were reported by the charities sector in the 12 months up to 31 March 2015.  By way of reminder, although there is no legal obligation on data controllers to report breaches of security, the ICO believes that serious breaches should be reported to it.  Fewer data loss incidents were reported by the charities sector than some other notable sectors...including the legal profession!

Those with a keen eye will also spot from the report that the ICO is not expecting the new European Data Protection Regulation to be agreed until at least 2016.  However, after the first “trilogue” meeting between the European Council, Commission and Parliament to agree the roadmap took place on 24 June, the European Commission has announced that is on track to adopt the data protection reform in 2015.  Watch this space for further developments!
