Emma Harrison

Principal Associate

What can I do for you

Emma is a principal associate in our insurance disputes team. She defends and resolves claims against clients from a range of professions including solicitors, barristers and insurance brokers. She also brings the experience gained from client secondments to advise on coverage disputes across all professions.

Emma's recent trial experience includes Torrance v Bradberry [2020] EWHC 3260 (QB). She led a team which successfully defended a barrister in a claim arising from her defence of an individual accused of rape. The barrister was found to be of “good judgment”, and the claim was defeated on both breach and causation grounds. The case restates and emphasises the high threshold for establishing negligence against a barrister, and the complex loss of a chance issues which can arise.

Supporting your ambitions

Emma has spent 12 months on secondment to one of the firm's largest insurer clients so she has an in depth understanding of how the insurance industry works, and of the key issues facing adjusters and underwriters, and their insureds. She is able to quickly grasp the key issues in a claim and identify an appropriate resolution strategy.

She is also able to call on her previous experience as a general commercial litigator, and draw on the resources of other teams within the firm, to respond to claims arising from a range of underlying issues including contract disputes, trust/probate issues and employment claims.

What do others say

Emma’s work has been described as “first class” and clients say she handles complex work with an amiable and unflappable attitude”.

Clients have commented that they are “particularly impressed with Emma's work on technical issues and policy response”.

She is “able to quickly grasp a situation and assist in its resolution without fear of delivering difficult messages where necessary”.

What else should you know

Emma lives in Manchester with her husband and two young daughters. She enjoys reading and writing (when she has the time) and yoga.

What our clients say about us

  • I think Mills & Reeve are a wonderful firm. The support they have provided to us in a really difficult area has been brilliant, collaborative and commercially minded. The team were absolutely wonderful and a joy to work with. Amazing advice and support and a real collaborative effort with us. I can't thank them enough for getting us through some really tough times and doing so with an amazing can-do attitude.
  • They are friendly, fast, always available and always on top of the game. I tend to judge my legal team against the other side's legal team and never doubt Mills & Reeve is the better of the two.
  • All interactions have been very clear. Responses to questions have always been very swift and unambiguous. Our company, and my family, have used various services in Mills & Reeve with the same level of satisfaction.
  • I value the fact that Mills & Reeve are recognised as a good place to work in the UK Best Companies survey. This aligns with the values of our business and means that Mills & Reeve can share what is required to achieve this status with our business.

As many clients will testify, too many lawyers deliver the required legal expertise but fail to deliver an outstanding client experience. Which is why we always listen to our clients and constantly ask ourselves what we can do to deliver the results you expect.

You expect a close and attentive working relationship, with a lawyer that is responsive and available when you need them. You also want clear, pragmatic and commercial advice tailored to your needs, and transparency and certainty on costs. We completely agree.
