Our commitment to net zero

Mills & Reeve is committed to minimising our impact on the environment.

We promote environmental sustainability in all aspects of our operations and recognise our responsibility for guardianship of the environment.

We're making the following commitments to achieve ambitious emissions reduction targets to restrict warming to less than 1.5°C:

  • Achieve net zero status by 2050
  • At least a 50% reduction of our scope 1 & 2 emissions by 2030
  • At least 30% reduction of our scope 3 emissions within five years
  • At least 90% reduction across all our emissions, including scope 3, by 2050
  • Commit to having these targets validated by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi)
  • Commit to publishing our full greenhouse gas emissions data annually
  • Once we reach the long-term reduction target, we commit to purchasing certified carbon offsets equivalent to our remaining emissions
  • Complete our annual carbon footprint calculation, in accordance with the requirements of the relevant net zero protocol

Our baseline emissions are based on calculations produced and validated by Net Zero Now, which covers the period of our financial year June - May.

Emissions referred to cover scopes 1, 2 and 3 for both this baseline year and current reporting year are calculated following a market-based methodology.

Communicating our progress

To demonstrate our commitment to transparency and advocacy, we'll publish the validated annual footprint, targets, action taken and progress towards reaching net zero every year.

Our Carbon Reduction Plan and Environment Policy support these commitments - these can be viewed here:

We've committed to make significant changes in our business to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions across all three scopes. You can find a detailed timeline of our plans in our net zero roadmap.

A more detailed action plan is being developed alongside our wider sustainability strategy, this will set out how the targets will be met which will be approved by the Board and implemented and overseen by our Sustainability Steering Group.
