Building our energy and infrastructure team with partner appointment

We've appointed UK energy regulatory specialist, Sushma Maharaj, as a partner in our London office.

Joining from Shakespeare Martineau, Sushma brings more than 25 years’ experience advising across the energy sector in the renewables and low-carbon power space. She specialises in energy regulation, commercial contracts and market structures, advising clients across renewable energy, heat networks, and oil and gas.

Sushma’s appointment enhances the firm’s offering to clients operating in a rapidly evolving landscape. Demand for specialist advice is expected to grow as Ofgem introduces new heat network regulations, with further measures, including pricing controls and guaranteed standards of performance, set to follow in 2027.

At the same time, changes across the wider energy market, including grid connection reforms, the transition to net zero, and increasing interest in private wire solutions, are creating new opportunities and legal challenges for developers and investors.

Sushma will work alongside energy sector leader, Melanie Grimshaw, to grow Mills & Reeve’s national energy offering, delivering strategic regulatory advice on renewables and other major projects.

Sushma said: "I'm excited to be joining Mills & Reeve at such an important time when the energy sector is undergoing a period of rapid transformation, driven by regulatory change and increasing investment in new technologies and infrastructure. I look forward to helping our clients navigate these upcoming changes.”

Melanie added: "Sushma's appointment marks an important step in the continued growth of our energy practice. Her expertise significantly strengthens our ability to support clients on complex regulatory and commercial matters. As regulatory frameworks continue to evolve, her arrival enhances our national offering and enables us to meet growing client demand across the sector."
