Fundraising Code of Practice Review

News from the Fundraising Regulator. A wholescale review of the Fundraising Code of Practice was commenced in 2023. The aim of the review is:

  • to update the Code to deal with the modern, post pandemic fundraising landscape;
  • to deal with more sophisticated fundraising technologies;
  • to signpost to other regulators and rules where appropriate; and
  • to simplify and reduce the previously quite prescriptive rules to principles, in order to give charities greater freedom to fit the rules to their own circumstances.

The Fundraising Regulator has now produced a draft of the new Code. Next steps will involve:

  • In September there will be a 8 week public consultation on the new Code.
  • The finalised Code should come into force at some point after the Fundraising Regulator’s board approves it early in 2025.
  • Once the new Code comes into force, there will be a 6 month grace period to allow charities to adjust their policies and processes. No new investigations will be started during this period, but after this complaints will be judged against the new code.
  • Additional guidance will be published to help charities (and other parties involved in fundraising) implement the new Code.
