SASRIA: Riots and civil unrest insurance in South Africa
During July 2021 South Africa experienced the devastating effects of widespread and violent civil unrest and looting in the provinces of KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng. This was the largest and most destructive single event of civil unrest in South Africa’s constitutional democratic history. Mass violence and looting, burning of shopping centres and warehouses cost the economy an estimated R50 billion and led to at least 354 deaths.
