Equal pay update

Equal pay remains very much in the news with key developments in case law; the Equality and Human Rights Commission's triennial report; the introduction of the Equality Act 2010 and the release of the British film "Made in Dagenham" marking the fortieth anniversary of the equal pay legislation.

While most equal pay litigation over the last ten years has involved local authorities and the NHS, equal pay disputes are arising with increasing frequency in other sectors and this trend is likely to continue. In particular, we have been involved in significant equal pay litigation in the higher education sector in recent years and we anticipate seeing more claims in that sector and also in the commercial world.

Following Mills & Reeve’s recent seminar on equal pay in London, we have made the hand-out available here: Download Equal pay update - June 2011.  It summarises key developments, including the high-profile case of Professor Schafer v Royal Holloway and Bedford New College, in which we acted for the employer.
