NHS gender identity service granted permission to appeal

The Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust, which leads the national Gender Identity and Development Service (GIDS), has been granted permission to appeal the High Court decision on the ability of children and young people to consent to puberty-blocking treatment.

The High Court’s decision raises wide ranging implications for the treatment of young people with gender dysphoria (see our earlier blog here).

In its press release, the Trust said:

“We welcome the court’s decision to allow us to appeal against the ruling. Our priority is to work together with our partners to support our patients and their families while legal proceedings are ongoing.”

The Trust has also confirmed its ongoing support for the review commissioned by NHS England and led by Dr Hilary Cass.

This week has also seen the CQC release its report on the gender identity services following its inspections last year. The Trust has issued a statement in response to the regulator’s report which has rated the overall services as ‘inadequate’.
