Reforming the Mental Health Act

When can we expect the Government’s White Paper on reforming the Mental Health Act 1983?

In answer to a written question, Ms Nadine Dorries, Minister of State for Patient Safety, Suicide Prevention and Mental Health confirmed that the Government has committed to publish a White Paper which will set out its response to Professor Sir Simon Wessely’s Independent Review of the MHA and pave the way for reform of the Act.

Sadly we don’t have a date but an indication that it will happen “as soon as it is possible to do so” and confirmation that government will consult on its proposals and publish a Bill "when parliamentary time allows".

Here’s a reminder of some of the key findings from Wessely’s report.
