What can Alex do for you?

Alex specialises in intellectual property (IP) and data, and related legal areas such as commercial contracts, the regulation of technology, and disputes and litigation involving technical subject matter.

He has over 10 years of experience advising diverse clients – from start-ups and scale-ups to global brands – on a wide range of legal and commercial strategies involving intangible assets, across transactional, strategic, advisory and contentious scenarios.

Alex also founded and grew the legal Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) practice at his previous firm. He therefore has significant experience of helping organisations to navigate the legal, regulatory and operational complexities of this rapidly evolving area.

Alex helps organisations to turn the burden of increased compliance requirements and operational changes into commercial opportunity and competitive advantage. He has extensive knowledge of sustainable innovation and “clean tech”, and the intersections of ESG with IP, data, regulation and litigation risk.

Supporting your ambitions

Alex’s experience is notably broad. He has helped clients with litigation (up to Court of Appeal level) covering all major IP rights, commercial and public law disputes, M&A and investments in relation to IP-rich businesses, IP transactions and collaborations, and IP advisory and strategy engagements.

He has worked with a range of businesses – from seed stage to several technology “unicorns” and mature market leaders – across an equally broad range of sectors and innovations, including software, deep tech, clean tech, telecoms and media, financial services, luxury, retail and consumer, life sciences, sport, automotive, and energy and resources.

Alex also has a good understanding of international tax issues and innovation incentives applicable to intangible assets. He is therefore uniquely qualified to help organisations of all stages manage their intangible assets more strategically and holistically.

Alex has helped several early-stage companies build IP strategy into their commercial strategies, and vice-versa, to maximise the contribution of intangible assets to corporate value, while minimising IP registration and other costs. He has worked with fast-growth companies to file their first patents and realise innovation incentives, and has undertaken significant strategic, operational, transactional and contentious IP projects for some of the world’s best-known companies.

What do others say?

Since 2017, Alex has consistently been named a “key lawyer” in the Legal 500 (described by a client as “very approachable and extremely knowledgeable”) and a "Rising Star" in Managing IP’s “IP Stars”. His ranking in World Trademark Review's WTR 1000 index notes that he "manages large trademark portfolios for huge global players. He dispenses savvy strategic advice to bring about business-driven outcomes, spot issues and avoid disputes."

Alex sits on the AIPPI Copyright Standing Committee. He was previously a member of the INTA Internet Committee, and the blogging team at the widely read “IPKat” legal blog for three years.

What else should you know?

Alex’s academic background is in Geography, leading to longstanding interests in the incentivisation and location of innovation clusters, and sustainability.

Outside of work, Alex enjoys rowing, running, hiking, cycling (when fitter, he cycled from London to Paris in 23 hours), and experimenting in the kitchen.
