Insurance in sport

We provide pragmatic, commercial legal advice to meet the evolving needs of UK and international insurance businesses and their clients in the sports sector.

As a full-service law firm, our sports insurance offering has the unique benefit of combining our specialist sports team with our market-leading insurance team. Our sports and insurance team is led by Mark Hovell and Neil Howes who are both well-known in this field.

As for our lawyers - on the sports front, as advisors, participants, volunteers, and fans, we are passionate about sport, all of our sports industry clients and supporting their successes.

Our lawyers

Working closely with our national sports team who have expertise in a wide range of sports disciplines, our insurance lawyers operate across the UK and work with clients including insurance companies, Lloyd’s syndicates and managing agents, managing general agents and third party administrators.

Our experience

  • Successfully defended the President of a world sport’s governing body in three complaints made against him before the governing body’s Ethics Commission. All three complaints were ultimately dismissed or withdrawn.
  • Advising a Premier League football club in respect of a cross claim against another club, arising from a claim by one of our client’s players against the other club, and its player, whose reckless tackle had caused career threatening personal injuries. Against the backdrop of a threatened FA Rule K arbitration, we helped the club achieve a resolution without making a payment.
  • Advising a well-known football organisation on coverage issues surrounding personal accident policies for professional football players. We have also advised footballers, ranging from lower league players through to former internationals, on the merits of their claims under critical illness and permanent disablement insurance policies.
  • Working with insurers and insured to successfully resolve catastrophic injury claims arising out of sport head/brain injuries.
  • Acting for a sailing club where a member had breached their constitution and the sailing club wanted to take active steps following that breach.
  • Acting on behalf of a yacht broker who faced a claim arising out of a yacht that unfortunately sank.
  • Advising insurers in respect of coverage issues and disputes. More often than not these disputes involve high profile cases of significant value.
