In addition to the many provisions of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 coming into force on 1 October 2015, section 89 of the Act came into force earlier this month on 1 September 2015. This statutory provision extends the scope of the Student Complaints Scheme to many additional types of provider of higher education and their students. The Student Complaints Scheme has been operated by the Office of the Independent Adjudicator for Higher Education for 10 years under the provisions of the Higher Education Act 2004 and has now been extended to apply to a) institutions which provide higher education courses and are designated for the purposes of student support and b) institutions which have been granted degree awarding powers. This will include many further education colleges, sixth form colleges and other providers of higher education courses.
