Reputation management and media litigation

We are experts in advising organisations and individuals, sports professionals, household names and educational bodies who have faced adverse or intrusive media interest in print or online.

We can act in High Court proceedings arising out of reputational issues such as:

  • Defamation (Libel or Slander)
  • Misuse of Private Information
  • Breach of Data Protection

We also provide pre-publication advice to those who need to issue statements in order to mitigate the risk of their statements causing reputational harm and exposure to legal claims.

Utilising our expertise and contacts in this niche area we are able to support clients in what is often a crisis situation, and to manage reputational issues effectively and commercially, on an urgent, round-the-clock basis if required.

Our lawyers

Our team has advised both claimants and defendants in defamation cases and have acted in matters involving national media outlets including News Group Newspapers, Associated News Group and ITV.

Our experience

  • Acting for a group of sports professionals in relation to ‘spot fixing’ allegations. The National Crime Agency investigated these clients and the issue attracted significant national press attention. We assisted the clients from the outset, involving their professional sporting union, to present a claim against two media institutions for damages for libel and breach of privacy.
  • Advising a famous La Liga footballer on an urgent basis in relation to a potential libel claim against an author and publisher of a book containing potentially defamatory content.
  • Acting for a high profile Head of Governors of an Academy school who faced libel proceedings against her in relation to comments published in a letter to parents, subsequently published by several newspapers. We negotiated a swift resolution with minimum disruption to her focus on student services.
  • Giving pre-publication advice to a national household name regulatory body of professionals, in relation to the implications and potential liability for statements to be issued to the press dealing with a topical issue and one involving attention raised in parliament.
  • Advising a premiership footballer regarding threats made to his family via Instagram
